The White Sheik

Director: Fellini

With Brunella Bovo| Leopoldo Trieste| Alberto Sordi. Italy| 1952. English subtitles. Black and white. 92 min.

A newly-wed couple go to Rome on honeymoon, but she sneaks off to find the man of her dreams, the White Sheik from her favourite photo-romance magazine. Developed from an idea by fellow Italian maestro Michelangelo Antonioni, this was Fellini’s first feature as solo director, and the first with music by Nino Rota. Containing passages of brilliant farce, The White Sheik manages to get inside the allure of romance even while presenting the world that produces it as patronising, cynical and ridiculous.
