THE PSYCHIC

Director: Lucio Fulci

ITALY| 1977. COLOUR. ENGLISH DIALOGUE. DIGITAL VIDEO. 93 MIN.

Although the late Lucio Fulci is more renowned for zombie features and breathtaking depictions of brutality (hence his reputation as the ‘godfather of gore’), here he proves adept at the kind of psychological thriller more commonly favoured by fellow Italian stylists Mario Bava and Dario Argento. Discarding the trademark nudity and violence of the genre, the film focuses on Virginia (Jennifer O’Neill, familiar from Cronenberg’s Scanners), who has been prone to psychic flashes since childhood. When one of her visions leads to the discovery of a corpse sealed behind a wall and the inadvertent arrest of her husband for murder, Virginia sets out to prove her husband’s innocence and unmask the real killer, guided only by her vague mental flashes. Slowly the pieces come together, but in a horrifyingly unexpected way. A highly effective whodunit with intriguing elements of the supernatural, this is one of Fulci’s lesser-known but most satisfyingly enjoyable films.
