Irish Film Institute -THE ETERNAL DAUGHTER

THE ETERNAL DAUGHTER

Director: Joanna Hogg

96 mins, UK-Ireland, 2022, Digital, F-Rated

Filmmaker Julie (Tilda Swinton) and her mother Rosalind (also played by Tilda Swinton) confront long-buried secrets when they return to a former family home in Wales, now a hotel haunted by its mysterious past. The ever-present swirling fog, eerie happenings late at night, and tales of faces appearing at windows firmly position the film as a ghost story, but Hogg is using the tropes to cleverly unpack her own family history. Featuring a towering, deeply moving performance by Tilda Swinton, the acclaimed filmmaker’s beguiling latest film is a brilliant and captivating exploration of parental relationships and the things we leave behind.

The Eternal Daughter is a continuation of the collaboration between director Joanna Hogg, Tilda Swinton, and executive producer Martin Scorsese, following their critically acclaimed work on The Souvenir diptych.

There will be Open Captioned screenings at 15.50 on Saturday 25th and at 20.45 on Wednesday 29th.
