STATES OF FEAR

Director: Mary Raftery and Eoin O'Sullivan

1999

This RTE production tells the extraordinary story of Ireland’s industrial school system, within which tens of thousands of children were confined and many were victims of sexual and physical abuse. Using previously uncovered records, the documentary reveals a level of collusion and cover-up, both by the religious orders which ran these schools, and by the State which funded them. The broadcast of the documentary and the public outcry it provoked forced the Irish Government to make an unprecedented public apology on behalf of the State to the victims of the industrial school system.
