Eighteen-year-old Marina was orphaned at a young age; she travels to Spain’s Atlantic coast to obtain a signature for a scholarship application from the paternal grandparents she has never met. There, she navigates a sea of new aunts, uncles, and cousins, uncertain whether she will be embraced or met with resistance. Once again drawing on her own family history, Carla Simón’s third feature is as delicate and naturalistic as we have come to expect from the director of Summer 1993, and Alcarras.
