As part of an underground collective of filmmakers that grew from New York’s No Wave scene during the 1980s, Richard Kern was a key member of the Cinema of Transgression movement. His collaborations with Lydia Lunch, Henry Rollins, and Sonic Youth afforded him punk rock credentials, and his provocative experimental films exploring extreme eroticism and brutal violence retain their power to disturb.
Winding Refn has cited Kern as an influence on Only God Forgives, in particular the 1990 short film The Evil Cameraman, which is included in this programme. (Notes by Michael Hayden.)
Screening as part of Wanna Fight? (August 3rd – 31st), our season recognising the influences on director Nicolas Winding Refn and the roots of Only God Forigves.
