THE ADVENTURE OF HELPING (Abenteuer Des Helfens)

This dual portrait of community workers Friedrich Steinhart in Vienna and John Long in Dublin present a far from romantic picture of Irish society at that time. Friedrich is a 26-year-old political science student and ambulance driver in Vienna. John is the 20-year-old manager of a Simon Community hostel in Dublin’s inner city. Both are untrained. Both are unpaid. Both provide much-needed friendship and support for their city’s most vulnerable citizens.

WAITING FOR THE TIDE (Auf Die Flut Warten)

The only narrative film in Wagner’s Irish collection, this simmering tale of jealousy and obsession opens in modern times where an older man (Michael Garvey) fears the loss of his bookish young fiancée (Ruth Montgomery) to a more muscular object of her desire (Gavan O’Herlihy). The ancient tale of Fionn mac Cumhaill, Diarmaid and Gráinne, is conjured against the Atlantic coast and the majestic thrust of Benbulben.
