PHOTOGRAPH

Director: Ritesh Batra

110 mins, India, 2019, Digital, Subtitled

This film was released on Friday 2nd August 2019 and is no longer screening.

A gentle, adult romance, infused with melancholy, Photograph sees Ritesh Batra, director of The Lunchbox, return to Mumbai having made a number of English-language features. Rafi (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) is a struggling street photographer taking souvenir pictures for tourists. Unmarried, he refuses to look for a partner until he pays off the debts of his deceased parents, in spite of the mounting pressure to do so from his friends.

Miloni (Sanya Malhotra) has just won first place in an all-India accountancy exam, and her proud middle-class parents are forcing the shy and reserved girl into an arranged marriage. These two social opposites meet and form an unlikely yet tender bond when Rafi takes Miloni’s picture, and convinces her to pose as his girlfriend for the benefit of his revered grandmother (Farrukh Jaffar) who has come for a visit.
