Director Alex Ross Perry’s work has increasingly centred on music, from his superb feature Her Smell (2018) to hybrid concert film Ghost: Rite Here Rite Now (2024) and music videos for the likes of Kim Gordon. Pavements is a unique mix of all of the above, a slanted take on one of the key bands of the 1990s underground American music scene. Footage of the band preparing for their 2022 reunion tour and reminiscing on past glories is mixed with staged rehearsals for a jukebox musical, preparations for a band museum, and actor/musician Joe Keery (Djo, Stranger Things) researching his role as frontman Stephen Malkmus in a mooted biopic. Entirely appropriately, the film is as wilfully, imaginatively left-of-centre and entertaining as the band itself.
