MUSIC DOCS: FANNY: THE RIGHT TO ROCK Director: Bobbi Jo Hart 96 mins, USA, 2021, Digital Book cinema tickets Writing for Rolling Stone in 1999, David Bowie proclaimed, “One of the most important female bands in American rock has been buried without a trace. And that is Fanny . . . Revivify Fanny. And I will feel that my work is done”. Bobbi Jo Hart’s admirable documentary shows the truth of Bowie’s words in its portrayal of a band of pioneers, one of the first all-female rock bands, and a self-formed band that included queer and Filipina American bandmates. Despite the acclaim of peers and critics, high-profile tours, and hit records, the band had faded from view before recently reforming and once again blazing a trail, this time for older women in rock.
