LISTEN UP PHILIP Director: ALEX ROSS PERRY 108 minutes, U.S.A., 2014, Colour, D-Cinema Book cinema tickets This film was released on Friday 5th June 2015 and is no longer screening. ★★★★ The Guardian ★★★★ Movies.ie EXCLUSIVELY AT IFI Narcissistic writer Philip Lewis Friedman (a perfectly cast Jason Schwartzman) is grouchily awaiting the publication of his second novel. His various neuroses mean his relationship with his photographer girlfriend Ashley (Elisabeth Moss) is deteriorating and he risks alienating his publisher when he declares he has no great desire to do promotional work for the book. When he meets one of his idols, the veteran novelist Ike Zimmerman (Jonathan Pryce), he recognises a kindred spirit, a feeling that is seemingly reciprocated when Ike offers his isolated summer home to Philip as a refuge from the pressure cooker of New York. Philip jumps at the offer, though with Ike adopted as a mentor, the situation only gives him the excuse to be more self-indulgent and insufferable. Alex Ross Perry’s latest film is a whip-smart, keenly observed literary comedy that is often painfully funny and ultimately uplifting. (Notes by Michael Hayden.)
