Once Upon a Time in Harlem is a cinematic time capsule, built around the late filmmaker William Greaves’s extraordinary footage of a 1972 gathering of surviving Harlem Renaissance luminaries at Duke Ellington’s townhouse. Completed by Greave’s son David (who was one of four cameramen on the original shoot), and granddaughter Liani, this illuminating documentary preserves an invaluable conversation on Black creativity, culture, memory and artistic legacy across generations.
