IFI & aemi are delighted to present the Irish premiere of Haitian-Canadian director Miryam Charles’s feature debut Cette Maison (This House), a film that has received significant accolades since its Berlinale premiere last year, including a place in Sight and Sound’s list of 50 best films of 2022. Prior to Cette Maison, Charles made a suite of short films, each more lyrical and beguiling than the last. Adopting a similar aesthetic and magical-realist style to her earlier work, Charles uses the longer duration here to approach the traumatic death of her teenage cousin in 2008. A cathartic ghost story that plays out in the liminal spaces between and beyond life and death, this film also asks important questions relating to exile and the persisting legacies of colonisation.
