HYÈNES

Director: DJIBRIL DIOP MAMBÉTY

110 minutes, Senegal, 1992, Subtitled, Colour, DVD

How about this to blast away the cobwebs of what we think about African film? A woman, jilted by her lover, moves away, becomes as rich as the world bank, and then returns home, half made of gold! Is her return to help the people in her village, or is there a more sinister motive? Hyenas is from a surreal play by Dürrenmatt, but the corrosive rage is by master director Djibril Diop Mambéty, who films in his own village, excoriating his own people for their avarice and consumerism. If he was the punk of African cinema, this is his Anarchy in the U.K. The ending grips and fascinates.

Screening as part of Stories From Africa (October 6th – 22nd).
