FROM THE VAULTS: THE LAST OF THE HIGH KINGS

Director: David Keating

102 mins, Ireland, 1996, Digital

Dublin 1977: Frankie Griffin (Jared Leto) awaits the results of his Leaving Cert, hanging out with friends and lusting after protestant girls Romy Thomas (Emily Mortimer) and Jayne Wayne (Lorraine Pilkington), much to the chagrin of his fiercely republican mother, played with gusto by the late Catherine O’Hara. Life lessons are provided by his thespian father (Gabriel Byrne) and American cousin (Christina Ricci). Based on the novel by Ferdia MacAnna, David Keating’s evocation of a Thin-Lizzy infused summer in Howth, this year celebrating its 30th anniversary, is a classic.

The screening will be introduced by the film’s director David Keating.
