FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL: THE TASTE OF THINGS

Director: Trần Anh Hùng

145 mins, France, 2023, Digital, Subtitled

Set in late 19th-century France, and loosely based on Marcel Rouff’s 1924 novel, La Vie et la passion de Dodin-Bouffant, gourmet, this gastronomy and romance mixture centres on the relationship between Eugénie (Juliette Binoche), an outstanding and fervent cook, and the famous gastronome Dodin (Benoît Magimel). Working together for 20 years, Eugénie is fiercely independent, never wanting to marry Dodin. So Dodin decides to do something he’s never done before – cook for her.

French-Vietnamese director Trần Anh Hùng (The Scent of Green Papaya) brings us a textured, joyful, and luminously-crafted work, through vivid and hypnotic culinary scenes, and tender and palpable moments of romance between Eugénie and Dodin.
