89 minutes. Ireland. Colour. 2013. D-cinema

There will be a post-screening Q&A hosted by Conor Horgan with Director Inigo Westemeier.

Winner of Best International Film at the prestigious Hot Docs film festival, Dragon Girls is at once a formal masterpiece and a film of great tenderness.

Set at the Shaolin Tagu Kung Fu school (the birthplace of kung fu), cinematographer-turned-director Inigo Westmeier trains his camera on three young female students among thousands of male counterparts as they sacrifice the normalities of childhood, in pursuit of the honour, respect and awe they will gain from succeeding at this prestigious institute.

Success won’t come easily as these young warriors must push their bodies to great lengths to meet the required standards and this film wonderfully captures both touching moments from these children’s lives and the grandeur of a truly unique setting.

“This is an outstanding film that can’t be missed. It’s inspiring and sad in the same moment, and is a fascinating look into a world many of us don’t understand.” Toronto Film Scene

This film is showing as part of the IFI Stranger Than Fiction 2013, Documentary Film Festival (September 26th – 29th).
