DOPE (OPENS SEPT 4TH)

Director: RICK FAMUYIWA

103 minutes, U.S.A., 2015, Digital

This film was released on Friday 4th September 2015 and is no longer screening.

Malcolm Adekanbi is a geeky high school senior whose best friends, Jib and Diggy, are as obsessive about ‘90s hip hop as he is. Determined to get into Harvard, Malcolm is a straight A student but is told he’s ‘arrogant’ to assume his marks will be enough to get in – apparently not many students from ‘The Bottoms’, California make it to the illustrious Ivy League school. However, when Malcolm inadvertently gets embroiled in a drugs feud, he discovers a way he might be able to bag that coveted college spot, but only if he can pull off a few shady deals first.

Like the best teen comedies out there, Dope is all about nerds who disrupt the norm, get one over on the jocks and have their day, but what makes this very funny, smart and fast-paced film so exciting is its impeccable cast and unmistakably contemporary feel. (Notes by Alice Butler.)
