In director Marek Koterski’s absurdist social comedy, Marek Kondrat gives a terrific performance as Adas, a world-class obsessive-compulsive who is divorced, depressed and completely at odds with the world. Adas’s strict daily regimen is planned right down to the number of toilet tissues he needs. As a poorly-paid Polish schoolteacher, he has ample reasons to hate his school and its students. He’s horrified in advance by contact with the outside world, as well as with his ex-wife and teenage son. He turns on the television while eating and reacts with disgust to squabbles between members of parliament, offensive to a Polish patriot. Brief fantasy sequences give Adas a more complex inner life than his own incessant monologues suggest, without succumbing to whimsy. Kondrat is extraordinary as the histrionic misanthrope.
