BADEN BADEN Director: RACHEL LANG 95 mins, 2016, France-Belgium, Digital, Subtitled Book cinema tickets This film was released 30th September 2016, and is no longer screening. ★★★★★ Financial Times Ana, an aimless twenty-six-year-old returns to her hometown of Strasbourg in an effort to shake up her somewhat rudderless life in Rachel Lang’s wryly amusing debut feature. That the titular German spa town makes no appearance in the film is perhaps apposite given the protagonist’s lack of certainty about her place in the world. Initially fetching up at her grandmother’s apartment, Ana takes it upon herself to upgrade the woman’s bathroom fittings when a nasty fall lands her in hospital, a DIY endeavor that forms the backbone of a film that is otherwise content to drift pleasingly between incidents and anecdotes as Ana, wonderfully played by Salomé Richard, reconnects with less than desirable old flames and tries to avoid the same ruts that caused her to leave Strasbourg in the first place.
