Shot over five nights at the Portobello Hotel where Robina Rose wored, Nightshift is an underseen jewel from the 1980s British avant-garde made by a filmmaker that Derek Jarman cited as sorely deserving of wider recognition. A proponent of a personal cinema shaped by direct experience, Nightshift exemplifies Rose’s eye for identifying key collaborators, enlisting American independent filmmaker Jon Jost as cinematographer and Simon Jeffes of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra as composer.

Screening with an introduction by pioneering filmmaker Pat Murphy. Pat was a founding member of feminist film distributor Circles alongside Robina Rose (Director of Nightshift). Pat has selected Maya Deren’s Meshes of the Afternoon to accompany this special screening.
