A Complaint of Rape

Director:

UK • 1981 • 45 mins

This fly-on-the-wall documentary on the Thames Valley Police captured a group of male detectives persuading a woman to drop her rape accusation, by being relentlessly – grotesquely – dismissive to her plea. This is one of the most astonishing and significant pieces of film-making ever made: it pioneered changes in British law, and heralded a new style in documentary.

Followed by Murder Blues A slick, gritty documentary in which film-makers follow Trident’s North London murder team as they investigate a sudden and alarming presence of firearms on London’s streets, this series utilizes highly stylized factual film-making for impact. UK • 2005 • 60 mins
