Four retired Sudanese filmmakers try valiantly to bring the movies back to the people of their homeland in Suhaib Gasmelbari’s award-winning debut feature. Led by the indefatigable Ibrahim Shadad, the Sudanese Film Club’s founding member, and undeterred by mounting red tape, censorship and intimidation, they begin by hosting free screenings of classics such as Chaplin’s Modern Times in town squares before taking on the formidable task of revitalising an outdoor cinema venue in the town of Omdourman, near Khartoum, which has been derelict for many years.
