BUTTERCUP BILL

96 minutes, U.K.-U.S.A., 2014, Digital

When Pernilla (Rémy Bennett) receives the news of the suicide of her childhood friend Flora, she is motivated to travel to rural Louisiana to reconnect with the other member of their group, Patrick (Evan Ouison), from whom she has long been estranged. Patrick welcomes her, and the two seem to pick up where they left off, playing around as old friends do. However, the games become darker as the two toy with the affections of others, drawing bystanders into sexual exploits that seem designed to humiliate, and it becomes apparent that there are unspoken secrets at the heart of their relationship.

The balmy environment of the American South is well used to create a dreamlike atmosphere that proclaims the influence of Terrence Malick in a striking debut feature from co-writers and directors Rémy Bennett and Émilie Richard-Froozan. (Notes by Kevin Coyne)
