A MAN CALLED OVE (WILD STRAWBERRIES)

Director: Hannes Holm

116 mins, 2016, Sweden, Digital, Subtitled

This film screened 25th & 31st May 2018.

There are grumpy old men, and then there’s Ove. Though not that old, he’s certainly grumpy. Based on the bestselling Swedish novel by Fredrik Backman, Ove feels that life is no longer worthwhile since losing his job and his wife’s death. However, interuptions by unruly neighbours keep disrupting his suicide attempts.

As flashbacks reveal his sad life, there are contrasting darkly funny scenes, and warm interventions by new neighbor Parvaneh and her family, who give him reasons to live again.
