Leonard Shelby’s (Guy Pearce) wife was killed in an attack that left him suffering from anterograde amnesia. Seeking to avenge her murder, he uses a bespoke system of notes, Polaroids and body tattoos as aides-mémoire as he tries to make sense of a jumble of disparate clues that might ultimately uncover the killer’s identity. In Memento, Christopher Nolan has fashioned a teasingly complex puzzle from an apparently simple premise, using a script that presents the story in two alternating timelines, one told in reverse, a conceit that attempts to mirror the condition of the protagonist, who is unable to retain short terms memories.

Screening as part of our Memory on Film season, May 11th to 29th 2019.
