A schoolteacher locates an unhealthy outlet for her frustrated literary ambitions in Sara Colangelo’s assured remake of Nadev Lapid’s 2014 original. The film’s knotty premise investigates potential child abuse borne from the sincere, if misguided, intentions of a damaged individual. Lisa (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is a dissatisfied wife and mother who becomes convinced that one of her pupils, five-year-old Jimmy, is a child prodigy when he begins to recite mature, polished poetry of which he is seemingly the author. Disapproving of her own less creatively inclined teenage children, Lisa’s fixation with Jimmy crosses boundaries into increasingly ambiguous territory when she brings the boy’s work to the attention of her night course literary tutor Simon (Gael García Bernal). Maggie Gyllenhaal gives a nuanced performance as the increasingly unstable Lisa. (Notes by David O’Mahony.) Don’t forget we now schedule weekly. Director: SARA COLANGELO 96 mins, USA, 2018, Digital
