23-year-old student Jeanne (Esther Garrel) has just been kicked out by her boyfriend. Heartbroken, she moves back in with her university professor father Gilles (Éric Caravaca), only to discover that he’s been living for the past three months with one of his students, Ariane (Louise Chevillotte), who is the same age as her. Both girls will find common ground despite their differences. The bare simple storytelling of an unusual triangular relationship of desire, rivalry and friendship extends the director’s ongoing exploration of female characters to form an elegant meditation on love and fidelity.

Director’s Note: The film’s grainy, luminous, black and white look, subtly paired with impressionistic music, gives Lover for a Day a timeless, meditative quality.
