This month’s Hangover Lounge feature has been selected to mark the 90th anniversary of the birth of the Czech director Karel Reisz, one of the key figures of the Free Cinema movement and the British New Wave, which falls on July 21st. Adapted by Harold Pinter from John Fowles’ novel, The French Lieutenant’s Woman presents a dual narrative where life begins to imitate art as Reisz artfully cross-cuts between a doomed love affair in 19th century England, and the actors – Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons – who are portraying them for a contemporary film.
