Spike Lee’s portrayal of racial tensions that escalate one summer’s day in Brooklyn was made after the Howard Beach race clash and the death of Michael Stewart in police custody in the mid-‘80s. Lee plays Mookie, who delivers pizzas for Sal, an Italian-American who runs a restaurant in a predominantly black neighbourhood with his sons, one of whom refuses to curb his racist slurs. Hostility builds when pizzeria regular Buggin’ Out confronts Sal about the photos of only white men on his wall. As Radio Raheem provides a ‘Fight the Power’-blasting soundtrack from the boom-box he carries at all times, friction intensifies and events begin to spiral.
