THE BURNING Director: PABLO FENDRIK 101 minutes, Argentina-Mexico-Brazil-France-U.S.A., 2014, Colour, Subtitled, D-Cinema Book cinema tickets This film was released on Friday 19th June 2015 and is no longer screening. Gael García Bernal plays a brooding, mysterious, Man With No Name figure who stumbles out of the Argentinean rainforest, half-naked. There’s a land grab going on and he nobly runs to the rescue of the kidnapped daughter of a dirt poor farmer (Alice Braga) after her family are targeted by vicious mercenaries. Sergio Leone is a key reference for Pablo Fendrik’s engrossing revenge thriller and The Burning plays out like a modern day eco-western, depicting a similar degree of lawlessness, violence and corruption occurring in the South American jungle when it once seemed to be the preserve of the American plains. Bernal and Braga are both excellent, the dense, evocative jungle backdrops are captivating and Fendrik does a great job of building white knuckle tension, keeping the drama slow burning before the release of its breathtaking, gung-ho climax.
