The IFI continues its regular strand in which a revered film from world cinema history is introduced by a filmmaker, film critic or academic who will aim to justify its importance in the canon and identify its resonance for modern audiences.

This month, writer and actor Mark O’Halloran (Adam And Paul, Garage) presents esteemed Hungarian auteur Béla Tarr’s Werckmeister Harmonies. Told in Tarr’s characteristically spare style, with shots lasting many minutes, the film uses the arrival of a circus in a small town as a means to meditate on the effects of oppressive political systems on both individuals and the wider society.
