Connecting a range of differing filmmaking disciplines are themes of fractured relationships, loss, renewal and unexpected discoveries. Featuring films from new and established practitioners, the programme presents the work of filmmakers who are distinct in style but who each echo a thoughtful engagement with gender as an evocative cinematic voice. The programme includes: Joy (Joe Lawlor and Christine Molloy); The Visit (Orla Walsh); Loose End (Louise Bagnall); Small Change (Cathy Brady); and London Suite (Vivienne Dick). (Notes by Michael Ryan.) This event is part of Beyond the Bechdel Test, our season throughout July focusing on the work of directors who have explored the complex ties between women that are an integral aspect of the films’ narratives, named after the American cartoonist Alison Bechdel who introduced the idea in her 1985 comic strip.
