THE CATERPILLAR WISH Director: Sandra Sciberras AUSTRALIA| 2006. COLOUR. DOLBY DIGITAL STEREO. 95 MIN. Book cinema tickets In a small coastal town in Victoria, 17-year-old Emily (Victoria Thaine) is anxious to find out who was her father. Her single mom Susan (Susie Porter) wants to keep the past closed off, and maintains that the father was a ‘tom cat’a tourist who came through the town one summer and never returned. Local boatman Stephen (Robert Mammone), however, is haunted by the past and memories of his deceased wife and daughter. Carl (Philip Quast), the town policeman, is hiding the past from his wife Elizabeth (Wendy Hughes), while their older son Joel (Khan Chittenden) has a secret affair with Emily. Writer-director Sandra Sciberras is making her second feature (after Deeper than Blue), and her storytelling is more confident and accomplished this time around. Sciberras’ focus is on character, not action, and her scripts attract top-flight actors. She writes particularly well for women. In The Caterpillar Wish, Victoria Thaine is a good fit for Sciberras’ theme of the optimism and innocence of youth.
