Ahlo is a young boy growing up in Laos, blamed for damning his family with bad luck when a series of events sees them forced from their home and wandering the war ravaged country looking for somewhere to live. He meets the sprightly orphan Kia, and is introduced to her eccentric uncle Purple, a war veteran dedicated to rice-wine and James Brown, whose name derives from the colour of his wild suit. The pair end up tagging along with Ahlo and his family, when Ahlo, determined to prove he is not carrying a curse, decides he must build a rocket big and bold enough to compete in the famous Rocket Festival.

Beautifully filmed on location in Laos and featuring fine performances from a cast from differing generations, Australian director Kim Mordaunt’s film is elegant and fascinating, presenting the traditions, rituals and festivities of a country rarely seen in cinema. (Notes by Michael Hayden.)
