She is! The archive footage presented here bears witness to the amazing performer and true original Kathleen Hanna is; she wrote the manifesto for the Riot Grrrl movement and, with bands Bikini Kill and Le Tigre, has made urgent, exciting pop music which confronts political issues with wit and vitality. Hanna mysteriously stopped performing in 2005 and Sini Anderson’s affecting documentary portrait builds to reveal why she had to, as she prepares to make a come-back with a great album from The Julie Ruin released last year. (Notes by Michael Hayden.) This film is screening as part of Rock&Roll, the final of our three-month season dedicated to excess, presenting examples of how cinema has taken on sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll in Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll.
