But under threat of international boycott, Jewish athletes were allowed to try for places on the teams. Jewish high jumper Gretel Bergmann must compete against the authorities’ choice, Marie, who is in fact a man. An unlikely friendship strikes up between the two athletes as they find themselves for very different reasons on the outside.
