THIS IS ENGLAND (EVENING COURSE: HEROIC GESTURES) Director: Shane Meadows (101 minutes, U.K., 2006, Crime/Drama Book cinema tickets This explosive feature proposes a new form of heroism by means of victimhood and alienation through its 13-year-old lead (the brilliant Thomas Turgoose) and the gang of skinheads that take him under their wing. Although set in the early 1980s, the milieu of growing racism, poverty, absent fathers and dangerous streets are familiar traits of today’s ‘broken Britain’, or of Ireland’s Love/Hate estates. Drawing on this film, Dr. Debbie Ging will discuss the male anti-hero in cinema, looking also at examples from American and French cinema, and at the Irish film, Savage. This event is taking place as part of the IFI Evening Course, Heroic Gestures (February 4th – March 11th). Full course price: €60 (€55 concessions), including tea/coffee. Please book your place by calling Sharon Corrigan on 01 679 5744 or emailing scorrigan@irishfilm.ie (Individual tickets for films on this Course are not available.)
