Private: CHINESE PUZZLE Director: Cédric Klapisch 117 minutes, France, 2013 Book cinema tickets Following the huge box office successes of both L’Auberge espagnole (2002) and Les poupées russes (2005), writer and director Klapisch returns with this jaunty third instalment recounting the cosmopolitan lives of Romain Duris’ Xavier and friends. Following the break-up of his marriage to Wendy (Kelly Reilly), Xavier leaves Paris to follow her to New York, where she has moved with their two young children. Juggling single fatherhood with attempts to write a novel, find a place to live, and (fraudulently) secure a visa, Xavier also manages to get re-acquainted with Martine (Audrey Tautou)… but not without several diversions along the way. This is light, fast-paced and entertaining stuff. (Notes by Alice Butler.) Director’s Note: Xavier’s life resembles a real Chinese puzzle in Klapisch’s charming new comedy. This film is showing as part of the Carte Noire IFI French Film Festival (November 20th – December 1st, 2013). Director: Cédric Klapisch 117 minutes, France, 2013
