In the summer of 1988, on a country highway running through a forest ravaged by wildfire, two men are painting lines down the middle of the road. Lance (Emile Hirsch) is a frustrated, hard-partying dude who is missing the distractions of town, while Alvin (Paul Rudd) revels in the isolation, writing florid prose in letters to his beloved girlfriend, who happens to be Lance’s sister. While they fulfill their mundane work, the mismatched pair joke, bicker and generally wind each other up in the oppressive weather, only rarely interrupted by presences visiting the forest.

Adapted from a little seen Icelandic film called Either Way, David Gordon Green has succeeded in bridging the gap between his esoteric early work (George Washington, All the Real Girls) and his broader commercial comedies (Pineapple Express, Your Highness) creating a pared-down, offbeat delight.
