A Thousand Clouds of Peace Fence the Sky, Love; Your Being Love Will Never End Director: Julian Hernandez Mexico| 2003. English subtitles. Black and white. 82 min. Book cinema tickets Winner of the ‘Teddy’ as ‘Best Gay Film’ at the 2003 Berlin Film Festival, this highly stylised first feature from director Julian Hernandez follows gay teenager Gerardo (Juan Carlos Ortuño) as he roams the streets of Mexico City in search of someone able to reveal the secret hidden between the lines of a goodbye letter from his ex-boyfriend. Gerardo’s wandering leads to a series of empty sexual encounters in a vain search for comfort. With its beautiful, languorous shots of the chief protagonist against rubble-strewn streets and graffiti covered walls, A Thousand Clouds . . . is at times reminiscent of Wong Kar-wai’s work, especially his gay romancer Happy Together.
