The upcoming release of Brazilian director Walter Salles new film – an adaptation of Kerouac classic On the Road – prompts us to look again at his earlier internationally acclaimed feature. This Oscar-nominated drama tells the story of opportunistic former teacher Isadora who gets paid for writing letters for people in Rio’s central station, most of which end up in the bin. One day she’s asked to write for a woman whose husband is missing and her young son. Events occur to make the boy seek out Dora again and, after a few false starts, they end up on the road together searching for his father. The Brazil depicted is vast, real and open, a blend of old and new revealed to us through the eyes of Dora and the boy in this wonderful story of survival, hope and the human capacity for change. €3.85 including regular tea/coffee before the screening.
