The June visit to Ireland of Burma’s pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi offers an ideal opportunity for this recent biopic, which had a limited cinema run. Released in 2010 from 15 years of house arrest and democratically elected, Suu Kyi’s story is a remarkable one of survival, struggle and iron determination.

The daughter of assassinated leader Aung San, she lived in Oxford for years during Burma’s dictatorship before returning to visit her mother whereupon she got swept up in protests and then arrested. Imprisoned, she became an internationally recognised figure for the democratic campaign, while her husband and children continued to live in Oxford.

The film stars the wonderful Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and endeavours to recount both Suu Kyi’s personal and political life.
