THE COMMITMENTS + Q&A

Director: ALAN PARKER

118 minutes, Ireland-U.K.-U.S.A., 1991, Digital

Alan Parker’s adaptation of Roddy Doyle’s novel was a career highpoint for all involved, and stands as one of the most popular of all Irish films, one whose warmth and distinctively Irish humour has seldom been bettered. Music fanatic Jimmy Rabbitte (Robert Arkins) believes that what Dublin really needs is a soul band to play the style of music he sees as expressing the quintessential experience of being a Northside Dub. The ragtag bunch he puts together includes the likes of guitarist Outspan (Glen Hansard), veteran trumpeter Joey ‘The Lips’ Fagan (Johnny Murphy), and talented but obnoxious singer Deco (Andrew Strong), with backing vocals by the glamorous ‘Commitmentettes’ (Angeline Ball, Bronagh Gallagher, and Maria Doyle Kennedy). As the band’s local fame and popularity grows, egos begin to clash, and the band’s big opportunity is put at risk. Unavailable for screening in recent years, we are delighted to welcome The Commitments back to Dublin to play for a hometown crowd.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with actor Robert Arkins.
