FROM THE VAULTS: A LOVE DIVIDED

Director: Syd McCartney

95 mins, Ireland, 1999, 35mm

In a small seaside town in 1950s Ireland, Sheila, a young Protestant woman, marries her true love, Catholic farmer Sean Cloney, and they take the Ne Temere pledge to bring up their children as Catholics. When Sheila refuses to send her children to the local Catholic school, their love is put under impossible pressure as they both become pawns in a power struggle which results in bitter sectarian conflict within the local community.

This story of love’s resilience based on actual events features striking central performances from Liam Cunningham and Orla Brady.
