Director: Ronan Day-Lewis

126 mins, UK-USA, 2025, Digital

CLOSING THIS THURSDAY 12TH!

Most commentary on Ronan Day-Lewis’s debut feature has focused on the return of Daniel Day-Lewis to acting following his withdrawal in 2017. While this is indeed something to celebrate, and Day-Lewis, who co-wrote the film with his director son, turns in a performance of typical intensity, it is far from the only element of note to the film. Much of the film’s striking imagery is derived from the director’s background in visual art, while the spectres of Tarkovsky and Pinter also loom large. Jem (Sean Bean, more than holding his own) seeks out his brother Ray (Day-Lewis), who retreated from the world following his expulsion from the army. In his stead, Jem took care of Ray’s partner Nessa (Samantha Morton) and son Brian (Samuel Bottomley). With Brian now in trouble, Jem reaches out to the father the boy has never met.

There will be Open Captioned screenings at 13.00 on Monday 10th, and 18.00 on Wednesday 12th.
