FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL: LA JETÉE, THE FIFTH SHOT

Director: Dominique Cabrera

97 mins, France, 2025, Digital, Subtitled, F-Rated

(LE CINQUIÈME PLAN DE LA JETÉE)

Chris Marker’s La Jetée (1962) was groundbreaking in its narrative form, comprising only photographs and one brief moment of moving image. In 2018, during a screening of La Jetée, Dominique Cabrera’s cousin suddenly recognised himself and his parents in a shot of the film at Orly Airport. Cabrera puts La Jetée in context– 1962 saw Algeria gain independence, and hundreds of thousands of ‘Pieds-noirs’ left their homes for exile in France via Orly – in a thrilling investigation, weaving together personal diaries, photographs, political reflection, and film history.
