INGMAR BERGMAN: THE PASSION OF ANNA

Director: Ingmar Bergman

100 mins, Sweden, 1969, Digital, Subtitled

Following the breakdown of his marriage, Andreas (Max von Sydow) has withdrawn to live in isolation. His solitude is disrupted when he becomes involved with the enigmatic Anna (Liv Ullmann), a widow mourning the loss of her husband and child in a tragic accident. Their relationship is further complicated by their interactions with a married couple, Elis (Erland Josephson), a cynical photographer, and Eva (Bibi Andersson), his disillusioned wife. The film, which incorporates documentary-style interviews with the actors, conducted by an unseen Bergman, is a fascinating variation on themes explored in Shame.
