AMERICAN INDEPENDENTS: SHORT CUTS Director: ROBERT ALTMAN 188 mins, USA, 1993, 35mm. Book cinema tickets Even as the decade was filled with exciting tyros, it also proved something of a rehabilitation ground for mavericks whose star had faded, embraced as they were by this new generation. While, for example, Tarantino revivified the careers of fine character actors such as Robert Forster and Pam Grier in Jackie Brown (1997), director Robert Altman, one of American cinema’s most independent-minded filmmakers, came in from the cold with The Player, (1992), his suitably scabrous take on Hollywood. Short Cuts is a superb display of Altman’s mastery of interweaving storylines, featuring a remarkable cast keen to work with the master. Notes by Kevin Coyne.
