One of the great films about filmmaking, and one of the key snapshots of the era, the plight of the indie filmmaker working in American cinema in the 1990s is brilliantly depicted in Tom DiCillo’s savagely funny comedy, inspired by his own experiences. Steve Buscemi and Catherine Keener, the king and queen of the decade’s independent films, play Nick and Nicole, the director and lead actress on a low-budget film on which everything that can go wrong does, whether due to the apathetic, careless crew, the egomaniacal lead actor determined to be the star, or any number of unexpected factors.
